Writing a Cover Letter

A nicely written cover letter can be the key between getting a job and just getting the “thanks for applying, but no thanks” letter. Make your cover letter stand out from the rest. There are some basic things to remember when writing a cover letter.

Make sure your cover letter is for the job you are applying for. Tailor your cover letter for each position. That’s right, re-write your cover letter every time! Have it clean and simple, but to the point. The employer doesn't want to read a cover letter that sounds like a book. Make sure your cover letter is no more than one page long.

Your cover letter should include the following information:

Letterhead
Your name, address, phone number and email address. This makes it easy for them to reach you for an interview.

Inside address
This is the same address that you have on the envelope. This helps you in case the mail get lost or damaged and is returned that you know where you need to resend it.

Salutation
This is a formal business letter you need to use Mr., Ms., and Mrs. with the persons last name.

Opening paragraph
This part of the cover letter is important, it lets the employer know what position you are applying for and how you heard about the position. This is also a good time to show your knowledge about the company. Write a brief sentence showing you have done some research about this company.

Middle paragraph
This is where you are going to boost your knowledge and skills. This is a critical part of a cover letter. If the employer doesn't like what they read in this paragraph they probably won't consider looking at the resume. Make sure the qualifications that you list are part of the job that you are applying for.

Closing paragraph
This part of the cover letter is just to briefly summarize what they have already read. Stress your interest in the job and why you feel you would be a good employee. This is also where you state what your intents are. Such as are you planning to contact the employer, how and when. Don't simply write “ I hope to hear from you soon.” This is a formal letter not a brief note to an old friend.

Closing and signature block
Sincerely is a good way to end a cover letter. Your name should be typed in this area also. You signature should be between the sincerely and your typed name. Don’t forget to sign your cover letter, this will show a personal touch.

If your cover letter is written correctly, your resume is up to speed, and you are qualified for the position, chances are you will get an interview.
